The fact is that many conservative Christians don't consider Mormons to be Christians at all while many more see them as just another cult with exceptionally nutty ideas. Mormonism is a both an advantage (their people line up behind them and GIVE money) and a drag on the candidacies of both Romney and Huntsman. I suspect that if Rick Perry gets in, he'll give Romney a real run for his money -- perhaps with Bachman as VP. If Jeb Bush decides to get in at the convention, he'll sweep them all aside. Just my two cents. In either case, I would reply that OF COURSE it should matter. A person's values and ideology are of the most central importance in reckoning their fitness for any task. The fact that there is no "religious test" or proscriptive oath certainly doesn't mean that voters can't or shouldn't take one's religious views or practices into consideration.
